Roanoke Valley Choral Society, originally known as Roanoke Valley Chorus, was organized in 1963 by the Roanoke Chapter of The American Guild of Organist. It is a non-profit organization which promotes performance of fine choral works of all types and musical periods.

The Roanoke Valley Chorus merged with a sister group, the Virginia Choral Society, to form the Roanoke Valley Choral Society. Once affiliated with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, the group now stands on its own, selecting its own programming and sustaining itself with its own fundraising efforts.

Auditions are open to persons throughout the Roanoke Valley and other communities within commuting distance. The purposes of the group are develop and foster musical talent, to create broader appreciation of choral music in the area, and to provide social and educational functions to area families.

Because of its rigorous rehearsal schedule, audition and attendance requirements, and professional leadership the chorus is able to undertake challenging choral pieces beyond the scope of many groups.

The group’s strong commitment to the community has led to its stance of keeping its concerts open to the public on a donation-only basis, so that no interested attendee is turned away for financial reasons. The community has stepped up to the plate, support coming forth from individuals and businesses throughout the community. The choral society expresses appreciation to all those—performers and supporters—who continue to make this organization a vibrant member of the Roanoke Valley arts community.
